Hot take: a $9 infrared thermometer fixed my Buick's overheating mystery after I spent $200 guessing
My 1965 Buick Special kept creeping past 220 on the gauge every time I sat in traffic, and I threw parts at it for a month. New thermostat, new radiator cap, flushed the system twice, even swapped the temp sender because I was sure the gauge was lying. Then a guy at the Sunday meet in Riverside told me to stop guessing and get a cheap infrared thermometer from the hardware store. I shot the thermostat housing, the top hose, and the radiator tanks while the engine idled, and the readings were 40 degrees cooler than what my dash gauge showed. Turns out the engine was fine the whole time and my 60 year old gauge was just reading wild. I learned that a $9 tool and ten minutes of pointing it at stuff beat a whole month of buying parts I did not need. Now I want to check the gauge against a known temp, so what is the best way to calibrate one of these old units?
