My old man swore by 10W-30 in his flathead, and my machinist just laughed at me for it
Pop put straight 30 in that flathead six for 40 years and said the thicker oil was the only thing keeping it alive, so I kept right on doing it after he passed. Brought the block to a machinist over in Lansing last month and he showed me the oil passages were sludged shut and the bearings worn bad, said modern 10W-30 would flow better cold and keep the motor cleaner. So what weight are you all running in your old flatheads, and does anyone still swear by the thick stuff?
Sludge in an 80 year old motor seems like it could just be from decades of use, not the oil weight. My granddad ran straight 30 in everything and those motors lasted plenty long. The machinist might be right about cold flow, but I'd want to see proof the thick stuff actually caused the wear before I go changing what worked for 40 years.
