Rant: Heard some young kid at the parts store say synthetic oil is a waste in old engines

I was standing right there and wanted to ask him how many flat tappet cams he's wiped out running conventional on a 1969 350 before I just paid and walked away, anyone else had to bite their tongue lately?

You sure he was talking about flat tappet cams or just old engines in general? Because those two things are way different. Synthetic oil is actually fine for most old engines if the seals are in good shape and it's been broken in right. But yeah, I'd still take conventional on a fresh flat tappet cam for the first few hundred miles, no question there. The kid probably heard "old engine" and just assumed it was all the same deal.
