Shoutout to the old timer who told me to grease my trunnions with a cheap grease gun
I figured he was just being nostalgic when he said my Spitfire's front end would thank me, but after 200 miles on a $18 grease gun the steering play cut in half. Turns out those little trunnion fittings get ignored by most guys and dry out fast. Anyone else running a grease schedule on theirs, or am I overdoing it at every oil change?
Man, I hate to burst your bubble but the steering play going away probably isn't from the grease itself. Those trunnion fittings mostly lube the threads and the bushings, but if your play actually cut in half you likely had a top ball joint or a rack mount bolt that was loose and got bumped while you were under there. Grease doesn't tighten up worn parts, it just slows the wear down. I'm not saying skip the job though, dry trunnions will chew themselves up fast and that's a real thing. Just don't count on a grease gun to fix play that's already there, give the front end a proper shake test with the wheels off the ground.
