That advice about 50-weight oil in a 283 was dead wrong
My uncle swore by it for his '62 Impala, said the thicker oil fixed his lifter noise, but after 3 months the mains started knocking and I pulled a wiped bearing last weekend. Anyone else been handed old-school tips that wrecked their engine instead of saving it?

Did your uncle also swear the engine just needed to "blow out the cobwebs" with a good hard run? I had an old timer tell me to run straight 30 weight in my 327 and add a can of STP every oil change, thought it was curing a valve tap. Six months later the oil pressure gauge started dancing like a bad stock ticker and I found sludge so thick it looked like tar in the pan. That thick stuff just masks the real problem until it eats the bearings for lunch.
