Dropped $150 on variant covers for a DC event story and the main plot ended up being terrible

I got caught up in the hype for that big DC event last summer and bought all the variant covers for the first issue. There were like 8 different covers at my local shop in Austin and I grabbed every single one thinking they'd be worth something later. Total waste of 150 bucks because the actual story inside was a mess with no payoff. The main writer quit halfway through and they had someone else finish it so the whole thing fell apart. Now those variants are just sitting in my long box collecting dust and nobody even wants to trade for them. I should have just bought the regular cover and waited for the trade paperback like I normally do. Has anyone else gotten fooled by fancy variant covers on a bad story?

Variants are such a trap sometimes, I feel your pain on that one.

Yeah I hear you on the "such a trap sometimes" part @lisa_wilson87, but I don't totally agree. I actually think variants are a good thing overall. They let me try different ideas without starting from scratch every time. The trick is knowing when to stop messing with them and just pick one you're happy with. I've wasted more time staring at two almost identical options trying to pick a winner than actually finishing the work.
