I finally realized how much older fans shape the hobby

Last weekend at a local con in Columbus, I overheard a guy in his 60s explaining to a teenager why he kept his original 1975 Conan comics in bag and board instead of grading them. He said, "The story is in the pages, not the plastic box." I never thought about it that way. That one line made me question why I chase high grades on everything I buy. Has anyone else had a moment where an older collector changed how you treat your own collection?
