I used to say comics peaked in the 80s until a 14 year old at my local shop explained why Kamala Khan matters to her
I have been collecting since I was a kid and for a long time I was that guy in the corner of the shop saying nothing good came out after 1989. Last Saturday I was flipping through a dollar bin at a store in Sacramento and this teenage girl next to me pulled out a Ms. Marvel trade and just started talking to me about it, not even knowing I had been grumpy about modern books all morning. She said Kamala was the first hero she ever saw who prayed, messed up, and still got back up, and that she read the whole run twice during a rough year at school. I stood there holding some beat up X-Men issue and honestly felt kind of dumb about all the times I rolled my eyes at new stuff. I bought that same trade for 12 bucks and read it that night, and yeah, it hit way harder than I expected. It did not make me love every new comic, but it killed the whole idea that my era was the only one that mattered. So what newer run actually got you to drop the old man act, and what book did it for you?
My old man act got killed by a Comic Book Guy moment of my own making. I swore up and down that Hawkeye was only good when he was being a jerk in the 70s, then a friend handed me the Fraction run and I read it in one sitting like a total hypocrite. Kate Bishop out there stealing the show and I am sitting there going well, this is actually great, whoops. Same thing happened with the new She-Hulk stuff, it felt fun in a way I had not felt since I was a kid reading off the spinner rack. Still not gonna pretend every new book is gold, but I have learned to shut up and read before I judge.
