Overheard a dad at the comic shop tell his kid 'the story is more important than the grade'

I was at my local shop, The Dragon's Hoard, last Tuesday picking up my pulls. This dad was with his son, who was holding a slabbed book and talking about its 9.8 score. The dad just said, 'Cool number, but did you read it? The story is more important than the grade.' It made me stop and think about how much I focus on condition and value sometimes. Made me want to just grab a cheap reader copy of something this week and enjoy it. Do you guys ever feel like the collecting side takes over the fun of just reading?

I mean, for me the collecting is a big part of the fun. I like having a nice slabbed copy of a book I really love. It's like having both, you know?

@barnes.morgan I get wanting a nice copy for the shelf. But doesn't slabbing a book kill the actual reading part? You can't even flip through the pages to check out the art. What's the point of owning Watchmen if you can't open it up to that amazing chapter five transition? It just becomes a plastic block.

You said you like having both, but how often do you actually read the slabbed copy?
