Serious question, why do so many fans act like you can't enjoy a movie if you haven't read the source comic?

Last week at the local shop, I overheard a guy telling his buddy the new 'Thunderbolts' trailer was 'objectively bad' because he hadn't read the 2012 run. I jumped in (maybe too fast) and said I loved it just from the trailer, and he looked at me like I had three heads. It turned into this whole 20 minute thing about 'comic literacy' before I just left. Has anyone else felt pushed out of a conversation for just liking the movie version of something?

Honestly used to be that guy until my wife got me into the MCU without any comic background. Seeing her pure joy from just the movies totally flipped my view on what really matters.

Took me a while to learn that lesson too. The gatekeeping thing just sucks the fun out for everyone, including yourself. Best move is to meet people where they're at. If they love the movies, just talk about the movies. The backstory stuff can come later if they're curious, but it shouldn't be a test. Letting go of that made enjoying this stuff with friends way better.
