The comic shop guy told me to read the whole run, not just the first issue

Back in May I walked into my local shop in Portland and grabbed issue #1 of a new series. The owner said no, go home and read all 12 of the first arc first. I thought he was just trying to sell me more books. Took him up on it last week and yeah, that first issue made zero sense without the context. Has anyone else had a shop employee's recommendation totally change how you approached a series?

I mean that's basically the whole point of trades right, getting the full picture instead of a cliffhanger.

Ha yeah right? Because cliffhangers are just so great when you're trying to figure out the real value of something. Nothing says "trust me" like leaving half the story out and expecting people to just fill in the blanks themselves. Trades are basically the only honest way to do business anymore, everyone else just wants to sell you a dream with no receipts. But sure, let's keep pretending partial info is the same as the full picture.
