Old timer told me to always run a spare air hose and I blew it off, till Tuesday
This guy Mike, been diving on the Gulf rigs since the 80s, told me to always have a spare air hose coiled and ready. I thought he was just being paranoid, figured I'd save space and weight. Well last Tuesday off the coast of Galveston, my primary hose got pinched on a beam and started leaking bad at 60 feet. Had to emergency surface which cost me half a day and a lot of headache. So now I'm kicking myself for not listening, but a part of me still wonders if it's really worth the extra gear. What do you guys do, carry a spare or roll the dice?

Wait, you actually emergency surfaced from 60 feet? That's insane, you could have gotten bent.

Go tell that to the old school Navy divers who did it all the time and came out fine. 60 feet is barely a bounce dive if you're in good shape and not holding your breath. I've seen guys pop up from 40 feet on a free ascent just to grab a dropped tool and go right back down. Yeah, bends is real but it's not a guarantee every time you move fast, especially not from that depth with a short bottom time.
