Pro tip: the guy who trained me in Houma said never fight a heavy umbilical in current, let the tender take the slack
I ignored him for two jobs and got dragged 15 feet off the riser both times. Now I radio the top before I even hit the water, anybody else got a rule they had to learn the hard way?
Well hot damn, that old man in Houma was talking sense and you had to go learn it with your face. Two whole jobs of getting yanked around like a kite on a string before you finally picked up the radio, that is rough buddy. Honestly the umbilical in current thing feels like one of those lessons where the water doesn't care how good you think you are that day. Mine was the opposite, I used to trust the tender too much and got lazy with my own checks, till one day the slack was wrong and I knew it before I even felt the tug. Now I call it out every single time, no shame in it. What finally made it click for you, the second drag or the look on your diver's face after?
