I used to give guys grief for spending $10k on a helmet when a band mask runs a fraction of that. Then a tender on our crew slipped off the stage during a job in Port Fourchon last spring, hit the guide wire, and came up with nothing worse than a cracked lens and a sore neck. Anybody here actually had a band mask fail on them, or am I the only one who got lucky for years?
Forty feet and the guy walks away with a cracked lens? That is nuts. I always figured those helmets were mostly to keep your face pretty on camera, not to actually save your neck on a real fall. Hard to argue with that result though, $10k starts looking cheap real fast.
