Shoutout to the librarian who told me to skip the fancy brunch spot on Elm
Okay so I always assumed the best cheap eats near downtown Portland were on the main strips where all the food carts line up, and I'd drag friends there every weekend. Then a librarian at the Central Library branch mentioned a tiny Salvadoran place tucked behind a laundromat on 82nd, run by a woman who makes pupusas for $3 each. I finally went on a Tuesday and there were maybe four plastic tables and a handwritten menu taped to the wall. The pupusas came out so hot they were still sizzling, and I ate three for less than what I used to pay for one sad avocado toast. What got me was how wrong I had been about "hidden" meaning hard to find when really it just means nobody bothered to look past the obvious blocks. Now I ask staff at libraries and hardware stores for food tips instead of checking apps, because they actually live in the neighborhood. Has anyone else had luck finding spots by asking workers instead of searching online?

Baristas are GOLD for this too, they know every cheap spot within walking distance and will tell you straight if you ask when it's slow. Try hitting up the same few people over time instead of asking a new stranger each visit, they'll start sending you to the real gems.
