That sketchy taco window behind the laundromat on 5th? I was wrong about it for 2 years
I walked past this tiny taco window on 5th street for 2 years and never tried it because it looked like a storage closet with a grill. Last month my car broke down nearby and I killed an hour waiting for a tow, so I finally ordered 3 al pastor tacos for $5 total. It was easily the best al pastor I have had in this city, and the guy running it told me he has been there since 2009. Now some of my friends swear the place across the street is better because it has a real dining room, but I think that is just people wanting a place to sit. So what is the call here, do you trust a spot with no sign and no seating, or do you need the full restaurant setup before you weigh in?
The "place across the street is better because it has a real dining room" line is the tell here, lol. Here is the thing nobody talks about: a spot with no sign and no seats is basically proof the food does the talking. If your tacos are bad and you don't have AC, comfy chairs, or a cute chalkboard menu to hide behind, you're done in a month. That place has been running since 2009 with nothing but a window and a grill, which means it survived on regulars alone. People who pick the sit-down spot aren't really comparing tacos, they're comparing comfort, and that's a whole different contest. Trust the place that had to earn it with nothing to fall back on, lmao.
