TIL the library in my town has a free seed swap and I've been buying $4 packets at the hardware store
I stopped by the Fairview branch last Tuesday to return a book and there was this little wooden box near the front desk full of seed packets. Turns out you just take what you want and bring back seeds from your own garden in the fall, no card or sign up needed. I grabbed basil, two kinds of lettuce, and some marigolds that would've run me about $16 at the store. The librarian said the swap has been going since 2019 and most people don't even know it's there. I planted the lettuce in a pot on my porch and it sprouted in 6 days. Anyone know of other libraries doing this? I want to check the one on the other side of town next.

Checked my own branch after seeing this and the seed box is basically empty most of the year, so it really depends on where you go. Ours gets picked clean by spring and nobody brings anything back in the fall, so the whole thing just dies out. Fairview sounds like they actually have people who follow through, which is the hard part with these swaps. Try the other branch but don't be shocked if it's a bust.
