Appreciation post: picking paper prompts over the weekly app challenge

Every Friday the writing group sends out this big themed challenge on the app, but last month I chose the old shoebox full of index cards my friend wrote prompts on back in 2012. I drew "a door that only opens in rain" and wrote 900 words in an hour, best session in ages. Anyone else stick with the older, simpler prompt source over the shiny new one?

Buddy of mine ditched the same app for a stack of sticky notes his grandma wrote memories on. Pulled one that just said “the summer we buried the bird” and wrote for three hours straight. Funny how the clunky stuff hits harder than the polished stuff.

Used to be all about the app, figured the fancy features and timed challenges were the only way to push myself. Then my sister found our old family recipe box and there was a card in it from my dad that just said “the last dog we had”. Wrote two pages before I even noticed the time. There is something about the worn edges and someone’s actual handwriting that just unlocks a different part of your brain. The app feels like work now, the cards feel like a secret.
