Debate: my $60 outline software either saves or sinks every project

I picked up a bulk outlining tool for $60 after a writing group in Cleveland swore by it. Half my drafts come out cleaner, but the other half feel like I'm forcing scenes into boxes that don't fit. Is structure a safety net or a cage for anyone else? Curious where people land on paying for planning tools versus just winging it.
