People say stuff like that all the time without knowing what they're talking about. A little exaggeration in dialogue can make characters more interesting and memorable. Maybe your style just wasn't what they expected, not that it's bad.

Three times last week I heard someone say "literally dying" about a mild headache and a slow internet connection. It's just how people talk now, we exaggerate everything to make regular life feel less boring. As long as the story still makes sense and the character feels real, a little extra drama in the dialogue is fine lol.
