I mean, sentient parking meters are kind of a thing already. Maybe it's just me but that idea sounds a bit familiar.

Hold up, have to correct something real quick. Sentient parking meters aren't a thing yet, like at all. They're just dumb hunks of metal that take your quarters and sometimes give you a ticket if you're late. The guy at the laundromat probably just had a weird dream or something. And that story idea sounds original to me, I haven't heard it before. Maybe it just feels familiar cause everyone's had a bad run-in with a parking meter at some point. But it's a fresh concept for sure.
