I was convinced 'write what you know' was terrible advice until my story about a botched oil change in Omaha won a contest.

I wrote a 500-word piece about the exact sound a stripped drain plug makes, based on a real Saturday at my uncle's shop, and the judge said the specific detail made it feel real, so has anyone else had a prompt work better when you pulled from a super mundane memory?

Remember my friend's story about a burnt microwave burrito.

Used to think those stories were fake. That burrito changed my mind.
