Unpopular opinion: prompts with strict rules kill the best ideas

Tbh I was in a workshop in Portland last month and the prompt said we had to use exactly 7 words per line and no adverbs. My piece tanked, I scrapped it after 20 minutes and wrote something looser that actually clicked. When I shared that version, the group liked it way more than the assigned one. Has anyone else found that following the prompt too closely makes your writing worse, or am I just bad at rules?
