Unpopular opinion: Writing prompts seemed lame until a cringey zoo story at my group
Creative writing prompts always seemed pointless to me. That changed last week at my writer's meetup. Our host gave a prompt about losing something important. My friend told a story about his keys stolen by a monkey at the zoo. The whole room felt awkward but then burst out laughing. That funny, awkward moment made me see the value in prompts. They can turn real life silliness into great story ideas. Now I use them to jumpstart my writing every time I feel stuck.

I caught a podcast that said prompts act like keys for locked-up memories. The host argued that forcing it ruins the magic, so just let it happen. Seems like your friend's monkey story proved that point perfectly.

Sounds like that podcast host never tried to force a memory about taxes.

That monkey key story is the perfect example of a lame prompt turning gold. When you use a prompt now, are you actively trying to remember an awkward real life moment like that, or does the prompt itself just trigger the memory on its own?
