Was dead wrong about creative writing subreddits for 6 months

I always figured writing prompts were just for beginners or people who didn't want to commit to a real story. Then a guy posted a prompt about a mail carrier who delivers letters from dead people and the 400 word response someone wrote completely changed my mind. Anyone else had a prompt lead to something that stuck with you?

That mail carrier prompt got me too, and my 400 word response turned into a 50,000 word mess I'm still too embarrassed to show anyone.

Take the opposite side here, @eric_carr. That 50,000 word mess is actually proof you found a story worth telling. Most people can't even get five hundred words out of a simple prompt, but you hit a nerve and followed it.
