Saw something at the old county courthouse that stopped me cold
I had to drop off some paperwork at the county courthouse downtown last Thursday, and I noticed they still have these old CRT monitors hooked up to the security desk. Not for display either, they were actually running the camera feeds. The screens had that weird green tint and flicker you don't see anymore. I stood there for a minute watching the security guard cycle through cameras using a physical switch box from the 90s. It got me thinking about how much has changed in just 20 years for security ops. We went from closed circuits and tape backups to cloud feeds and AI detection. That whole system probably hasn't been updated since Y2K. Does anyone else run into legacy setups like this in government buildings that just never died?

Honestly, bet that switch box outlasts the cloud stuff they'd replace it with.

yeah it's wild how we're trading stuff that actually works for decades for gadgets that need updates just to turn on. everything's got a chip in it now and a subscription fee for some feature that used to just be built in. feels like we're all just paying to hope the thing doesn't brick itself on a tuesday.
