TIL a vendor call changed my whole view on patching windows

I used to think patching was just a checkbox thing. Get them out, move on, whatever. Then last Tuesday during a vendor call about our RMM, this engineer said something like "every patch you skip is a door you leave unlocked for someone who knows the code." That hit different. We had a 40 server fleet and I was letting critical updates sit for weeks because of change windows. Now I push harder for the fast track even if it means some annoyed users. Has anyone else had a moment where a simple sentence flipped your ops mindset?

Ha! That vendor guy sounded like he writes fortune cookies for sysadmins. Honestly though, my moment was watching a test server get crypto-locked at 2am because I skipped a patch to "avoid breaking the app." The app broke anyway. Just in a much worse way. Now I tell my boss every skipped patch is just future me buying a really expensive lottery ticket I don't want to win. Annoy users now or explain a data breach later, easy choice. Glad someone else finally saw the light before they had to learn it the hard way.

Take it down a notch, man. That vendor got paid to make you feel scared so you'd buy more of their stuff. Patching is important, sure, but acting like every missed update is a death sentence is how you end up with managers who patch everything blindly and break production on a Tuesday morning. Sometimes the real risk is the patch itself, not the lack of it. There's a middle ground between "skip everything" and "panic update everything at once." Maybe your crypto story makes you see it differently, but that's your scar talking, not a universal truth.
