A simple change to my email subject lines boosted my open rate by 18%

I was getting really low open rates on my weekly newsletter for a small local business, like under 12% (which is pretty bad, I know). I read all the usual advice about personalization and urgency, but nothing seemed to click. Then, about two months ago, I started putting the main benefit or a specific number right at the very start of the subject line, before any cute phrasing. So instead of 'Check out our latest tips inside!', I'd write 'Save $25 on your next service appointment'. It felt almost too plain, but I gave it a shot for three weeks. My open rate jumped to just over 30% on average, and the click-through rate went up too because people knew what they were getting. I think my old subjects were just too vague and got lost in the inbox noise. Has anyone else found that super direct, benefit-first subject lines work better than trying to be clever?

Doubt it's that big a deal for a local newsletter.

Ever read it, the_mason? It's weirdly powerful.

Oh, it's a huge deal. My neighbor's cat got written up for knocking over a trash can, and now Mrs. Henderson gives him the stink eye every Tuesday (trash day, you know). That newsletter shapes local reality.
