PSA: 90% of my email list opened nothing until I binned the fancy templates
Sat down at a coffee shop in Austin last Tuesday and tested a plain text blast against my polished HTML one and the plain text got triple the clicks, so now I’m wondering if anyone else has ditched design for pure copy and seen similar results?

Has anyone else noticed how much junk gets added to emails just because it looks pretty in a preview pane? I used to spend hours tweaking colors and fonts for my weekly update, then one day my buddy sent out a two-sentence note from his phone and everyone replied to him. It made me realize I was trying to impress people who just wanted to know if the thing worked or if there was a sale happening. Now I keep it super simple, like a text conversation with a friend, and my open rates actually went up too.

Did you track your open rates before and after making that change? I'm curious if the numbers dropped at first before they went up or if people jumped on board right away.
