A 2003 GeoCities site about roadside diners completely shifted my opinion on cross-country drives.

Finding this old page full of personal photos and stories from 2003 made me SEE that road trip magic was built on random stops, not just the destination.

A buddy of mine drove with his dad last summer. They stopped at some broken down diner just for a bathroom break. Ended up talking to the owner for an hour, heard the whole history of the place. My friend said that weird stop is what he remembers now, not the big cities they saw.

My family drove to California in 2010 and got gas at this tiny roadside pumpkin stand 70 miles east of Phoenix. The older couple running it gave us free cider and told us all about how they built the stand, had their grandkids' photos taped up everywhere. We still talk about that more than Disneyland.

Ever notice how the best stories never come from the plan? Like when your phone dies and you have to ask for directions, or you get a flat tire in some small town and meet the only mechanic for fifty miles. We spend so much time on the big events, but it's the weird, unplanned stuff that actually sticks. The forced detour is where the real trip happens.
