Had to decide between saving my old LiveJournal or just letting it rot

I spent an hour last night digging through the Wayback Machine to grab my posts from 2003, ended up picking the cringey poetry over the boring diary entries because at least those made me laugh. Anybody else archive their old stuff or do you just let it vanish?

He argued that the screech and hiss is actual internet history in audio form, not some sanitized GIF, and now I wonder if we are erasing too much by only sharing the visual time capsule stuff.

Just realized my Angelfire page from 1999 still has the guestbook working somehow

Was digging through old bookmarks on a broken hard drive I found in my parents' basement in Cleveland last weekend and clicked on my teenage band's Angelfire site, and I swear the guestbook counter went up by one, which either means someone left a new message or the server ghost is still running Perl scripts from 25 years ago; has anyone else found a really old page that just refuses to die?

Wasted $30 on a Wayback Machine Pro subscription that did nothing extra

I got suckered into paying for a premium tier on the Wayback Machine last month thinking I'd get faster archive access or something. Turned out it just gave me a fancy dashboard and a PDF report of my saved pages. Regular free version does the exact same thing for digging up old dead sites from 2005. Anyone else fall for these supposed upgrades on preservation tools?

Can we talk about those old Geocities sites that just vanish?

Back in 1998, I ran a small fan page for a local band called The Rusty Nails out of Portland. I traded links with this one guy who had a huge collection of MIDI files and animated fire gifs on his site. He sent me a message saying 'if you don't save these pages, they'll be gone by 2005' and he was right. Has anyone else tried tracking down their old link buddies and found nothing but dead URLs?

My coworker made me rethink killing my old MySpace page

Been talking to a guy at the office who is 22. I mentioned how I deleted my MySpace page back in 2009 because it felt outdated. He said 'that was a real digital archive of your life, you trashed it.' It hit me different because now I spend hours digging through Wayback Machine trying to find band flyers from 2003. No one told us to save that stuff for the future. Anyone else regret deleting their old profile pages without thinking?

Found a Geocities page from 1997 that still has a working guestbook

Was digging through some old bookmarks on a backup drive from 2009 and stumbled onto a Geocities page about someone's pet iguana. The site is mostly broken images and Comic Sans but the guestbook at the bottom still let me leave a comment. It even showed the last entry was from 2003. Has anyone else found a page from that era that still works?

Stumbled on an old Geocities fan page for a defunct band last night

I was looking up some lyrics from a band I liked in high school and clicked a Wayback Machine link. It took me to a Geocities page with a starry background and animated GIFs of the band's logo spinning around. The owner had a guestbook with entries from 1998 where people just said stuff like "great site!" and shared their favorite songs. It hit me how pure and simple fan culture was back then, no algorithms or likes just people making pages for the love of it. Has anyone else found a time capsule page that brought back that feeling?

Found a Geocities page from 1997 that is still online

I was looking for old info on a band I liked in high school and stumbled on a Geocities page that hasn't been touched in 27 years. It's got a guestbook with posts from 1998 thanking the creator for the MIDI files. The layout is that classic tiled background with the animated fire gif in the corner. It made me realize how much character the web used to have before everything got polished into the same gray box. Everything now is just optimized for ad revenue and algorithms. Found a 2005 geocities site about my hometown that COMPLETELY nails the feel

Just hit 500 old website links saved in my bookmarks folder

I was cleaning out my bookmarks last night because my browser was lagging. I clicked into my folder labeled 'old web stuff' and saw I had exactly 500 links saved. That number surprised me because I didn't realize I had been hoarding that many old sites for years. Most of them are from the late 90s and early 2000s. Things like Geocities fan pages, old school forum archives from a niche gaming community I was in, and random personal blogs that haven't been updated since 2003. It felt weird because so many of those links probably don't even work anymore. I clicked on a few just to check and about half were dead pages. Old HVAC forums from 2005 had way better troubleshooting advice than Reddit now

I was digging through some bookmarks last night and found a thread on HVAC-Talk from 2003 where a guy fixed a weird Lennox pressure switch problem just by cleaning a spider web out of the hose. That kind of specific hands on stuff is gold. Now when I google a furnace issue I get the same three SEO blog posts that just say "call a professional." The old forums had techs arguing in the comments with real numbers and voltage readings. I miss when people just posted their actual experience without trying to sell you something. Has anyone else noticed the old forum content is way better for actual repair work than what we get now?

Old forum thread from 2005 made me realize I was wrongly blocking good photos all along

I was going through some old bookmarks on the Wayback Machine last week and found a photography forum thread from 2005 about image compression. For years I had been saving all my digital photos as JPEGs at the lowest quality setting to save hard drive space. I thought I was being smart, but the thread explained how that destroys the subtle color details in shadows. Then I saw side-by-side examples from someone named 'digiDan' showing the difference between a quality 8 and a quality 3 JPEG of the same sunset photo. The cheap version had blocky artifacts in the sky that I never noticed before. Now I have to go back and re-scan about 400 old family photos from 2002 to 2008. Old Geocities page on 1998 taught me alt text matters

Found this ancient Geocities site for a cat fan club from 1998. The images were all broken but the alt text was so detailed I could still picture each cat. Someone named 'Webmaster Dave' wrote paragraphs describing every photo. After that I started writing alt text for all my own old site archives. Anybody else find old pages that made you change how you code now?

I stumbled on it through the Wayback Machine last night. The whole site was this over-the-top steampunk theme with sound effects and a game where you shoot mechanical spiders. It loaded so slow on my old dial-up connection back then. But honestly, the effort they put into that site is something you just don't see anymore.
