Found my band's GeoCities page from 2001 on the Wayback Machine last night. I used to cringe at the blinking text and tiled backgrounds, but my kid pointed out how much personality it had compared to a modern band site. Has anyone else warmed up to that old web chaos after hating it for years?

My dog had knocked over a cup of coffee onto my external drive a few years back and I never checked if it still worked. I was about to give up when I remembered archive.org has a wayback machine and typed in my old URL. It pulled up my entire site from 2006, complete with the spinning globe gif and guestbook entries. Has anyone else had luck recovering stuff they thought was permanently deleted?

Back in 2004 I worked at a tiny web design shop in Portland and my boss made us save complete copies of every site we launched on CD-Rs. I thought it was a huge waste of time and space since those disks only held 700MB each. I grabbed that dusty CD case from my garage and popped in disk number 3 and bam, everything loaded perfectly. Anyone else have a piece of old advice they laughed at but now swear by?

Geocities page I saved in 2009 finally broke last night

I had this Geocities page bookmarked from 2009 that showed how to fix a broken PS2 disc drive. Last night I tried to open it and got a 404 error. The page was still up on some weird mirror site for years but someone finally pulled the plug. I checked Wayback Machine and there's a snapshot from 2012 but the images are all gone. Anybody know a good place to find old console repair guides before they vanish for good?

Was cleaning out my bookmarks last night and found a link to my old Geocities page from 2002. The site was down for years, but I threw the URL into archive.org and it pulled up the whole thing - animated gifs, guestbook entries, even my cringey 'under construction' banner. Took about 10 minutes to dig through the snapshots. Has anyone else had luck rescuing their old stuff from those early hosting sites?

Did the design of personal blogs peak around 2003 or did they actually get better over time?

Found someone selling a CD full of saved Geocities pages from 1999, mostly fan shrines for bands that never made it big. Was half expecting it to be junk but it had like 200 fully preserved pages with working guestbooks. Anyone else ever buy weird old internet memorabilia like that?

The whole reputation system from back then where your handle carried weight because you had to earn it over years made folks think before they hit send. Am I the only one who misses that kind of accountability in online spaces?

Does anyone else miss how simple the weather forecast sites used to be?

I remember in like 2004, I'd check weather.com and it was just a blue page with a 7 day forecast and no ads getting in the way. Now I pull up the same site on my phone and there's 15 videos, a radar map that takes forever to load, and popups about some local news story I don't care about. Has anyone found an old school looking weather site that still works well?

Wasted $30 on a Wayback Machine Pro subscription that did nothing extra

I got suckered into paying for a premium tier on the Wayback Machine last month thinking I'd get faster archive access or something. Turned out it just gave me a fancy dashboard and a PDF report of my saved pages. Regular free version does the exact same thing for digging up old dead sites from 2005. Anyone else fall for these supposed upgrades on preservation tools?
