Hit 500 dead sites on my Wayback Machine deep dive last night

Ive been going through old webrings from the late 90s and theres this one site about raising exotic birds that had a guestbook full of 1998 posts. People were talking about their birds like they were chatting in a living room. It hit me how much slower and friendlier the internet felt back then. Nobody was selling anything, just sharing stories about their parrots. Has anyone else run into a random old site that totally felt like a different world?

I mean, I get what you're saying but I don't really buy that it was friendlier, just smaller. I was on the internet back then too and people were just as nasty, it was just hidden in certain corners. You found a bird site, that's nice, but there were plenty of places where people were selling things or being awful, it was just more spread out and harder to find. The slower part is real though, you couldn't just spam a guestbook post and have it go viral, you actually had to sit and type and wait for someone to maybe reply days later. It wasn't better or worse, just different and a lot more isolated if you weren't in the right niche.

Those 1998 bird people were living their best lives though.
