My neighbor said he found a new hiking spot by just driving down random dirt roads
He told me he hasn't looked at a trail app in 2 years, and it made me wonder if we rely too much on being told where to go. How do you find new places without any online guides?

Check out old paper maps from the library, the ones with topo lines. They show every little creek and hill, not just the named trails. I'll find a bend in a river or a weird contour shape and just aim for that. The lack of a marked path is the whole point.

Totally get aiming for a weird contour shape. I do something similar with old forestry service maps. Once I spotted this perfect little bowl on the map, just a ring of tight lines, and bushwhacked up to it. Found a hidden meadow full of elk bones, zero trail the whole way. That's the real find.
