Vent: People keep saying you can't find good music without streaming services

I used to think that too, but I've been hitting up the public library in Springfield for the past 3 months. I found a CD from a band called The Microphones I'd never heard of, and it's better than anything my old Spotify playlist ever gave me. The algorithm just shows you more of what you already like, but the library's music section is random and full of surprises. I've checked out 14 albums so far and only disliked 2 of them. How do you guys find new stuff without letting a computer pick it for you?

You found a CD by The Microphones and think that's a win? How much time did you waste digging for that one good thing? My streaming service showed me that band last week, plus five similar artists I actually like. Who has hours to spend at the library hoping to get lucky?

You said "who has hours to spend at the library hoping to get lucky"... but that's the whole point. I read an interview where someone called that "the joy of the hunt." Finding something yourself feels different than an algorithm handing it to you. It's not about wasting time, it's about the experience of looking. The surprise of pulling out that CD means more because you found it. Streaming just feels like being fed, and I get bored of that.

Honestly, I get what you're saying about the hunt. Tbh, it reminds me of finding this old, beat up copy of a Tom Waits album at a yard sale for like a dollar. The cover was torn, but putting it on felt like I'd won something. An app just giving me his top songs doesn't hit the same way. That surprise you talk about is real. It makes the music feel like it's actually yours for a minute.
